Flossing: Why it’s more important than you think

Madurai Dental Clinic

Let’s dive into an often-overlooked but crucial aspect of oral hygiene: flossing. Many people underestimate the importance of flossing, yet it plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy dental hygiene. If you haven’t made flossing a regular part of your routine, this blog is for you.

Why flossing matters?

While brushing cleans the surface of your teeth, flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth and under the gumline. This is crucial for preventing cavities and gum disease.

Benefits of flossing

Flossing is often seen as an extra step in dental care, but it helps maintain a healthy mouth.

  • Prevents gum diseases
  • Reduces cavities
  • Reduces bad breath

Consequences of not flossing regularly

Failing to floss can result in various dental issues. Without regular flossing, plaque can harden into tartar, which requires professional removal. This buildup can inflame and irritate gums, causing gingivitis. If untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, damaging the bone supporting your teeth and potentially leading to tooth loss.

Additionally, bacteria from gum disease can enter your bloodstream, posing risks to your overall health and potentially contributing to heart disease and other systemic conditions.

The right way to floss

Flossing is simple with these steps:

  1. Use enough floss
Take 18 inches and wind it around your middle fingers.
  2. Proper hold
Pinch the floss between your thumbs and forefingers.
  3. Gentle motion
Slide floss gently between teeth; avoid snapping.
  4. Curve the floss
Form a C shape at the gumline and slide it under the gum.
  5. Clean each tooth
Rub the floss up and down along each tooth’s side. Repeat for all teeth.

Make flossing a daily habit

Adding flossing to your daily routine can greatly enhance your oral health. Choose a specific time each day, such as before bed, to floss. This simple habit can lead to significant improvements.
